Hi Derek, in blender you can split and join windows, heve a look at http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:Manual/Interface/Window_system/Arranging_frames
It's very powerful, you can design your workspace as you like, decide where you want the buttons, etc. Hope it helps!
